Welcome from the senior pastor

Welcome to the First Christian Church in Burlington, Iowa! We are a growing and vibrant church with a vision to help all of God’s people grow in their faith so that we can share God’s love. Since our beginning in 1870 as the South Hill Christian Church worshipping downtown to our present location on Park Avenue, we have been committed to reaching out our community a better place.

As you learn about our wonderful ministries and opportunities for learning and service, we want you to know that there is a place for you. From our fantastic programs for children and youth, to our small groups and Bible studies, our outreach and fellowship opportunities, and our traditional and contemporary worship services on Sunday morning, there is a place and everyone here at our church.

You can get to know us on social media and watch our services online, but there is nothing like being in worship and experience the community and warmth of God’s love. I hope you will join us to experience this welcome yourself. We look forward to seeing you in church this week!

Warmest Regards,

David J. Yonker

Senior Pastor

I'm New Here

At First Christian Church, our mission is to build a loving community that follows Christ in order to reach the community that is all around us, both locally and globally. We are trying to do that by becoming the kind of church the Bible describes – a church with relevant teaching, God-honoring worship, honest friendships, continual prayer and compassionate love for people.

If you’d like to get to know First Christian Church better, we suggest joining us for one of our Sunday services, watching a message online or exploring the ways to get connected below. Contact us if you have questions or need help getting started.

Church isn’t what happens in a building on Sunday. Church is a group of people who are connected to each other for the purpose of following Christ. You can find us on Facebook  and Twitter

Meet the pastors gathering

Are you looking for a church home? A place to place your faith in Jesus Christ for the first time or renew a faith that has gone stale?

If you are intrigued with what you’ve experienced at FCC and are wanting to explore about how to grow in our faith with us about you are invited to our Meet the Pastor’s gathering. Every other month, our pastors and leadership team lead an informal, lively introduction to our ministries and mission. These hour and a half sessions will help you get to know other new members and friends, learn about our ministries, outreach and fellowship opportunities, even explore parts of the church building you’ve never seen before. Childcare is happily provided upon request.

We believe that as Christians we are called to commit our lives to worshiping and serving Jesus Christ. So if you would like to commit your life to Christ through our church, we invite you to join by three ways:

  • Those who are uniting with a church for the first time are asked the question, “Do you believe that Jesus if the Christ, the Son of the Living God?” Baptism by immersion is provided for those making their confession of faith.
  • For those who transfer their membership from other congregations, no re-baptism is required.
  • We also offer associate members for those wishing to unite with our congregation, but not sever any ties with a former church.

Along with us, we encourage all people not just to attend worship on a regular basis, but find a small group, a community, ministry, a sports activity, or a prayer group to help you grow in faith. We call this “Worship Plus 1.” The goal is to find something else beside coming to worship on a regular basis to help you grow in your faith and connect you with others in our congregation.
